In conjunction with the closing of Yale Peabody Museum's acclaimed exhibition Mind/Matter: The Neuroscience of Perception, Attention, and Memory, the Wu Tsai Institute's Center for Neurodevelopment and Plasticity invites you to a special event exploring one of the most pivotal and poignant rivalries in the history of brain science.

On October 27, join us for a panel discussion with the world's leading biographers of Camillo Golgi and Santiago Ramón y Cajal, moderated by renowned science writer Carl Zimmer. Panelists include:

  • Paolo Mazzarello, neurologist and historian of medicine, author of The Hidden Structure, the definitive biography of Golgi
  • Benjamin Ehrlich, literary science writer and author of The Brain in Search of Itself, the celebrated biography of Santiago Cajal

This rare opportunity will explore how two rival visions—Golgi’s reticular theory and Cajal’s neuron doctrine—shaped our understanding of the brain, offering insights into the artistic, political, and scientific stakes that still resonate today.

The panel will take place in the Peabody's Central Gallery beginning at 5:00 pm. Admission is free and open to the public, but registration is required. Following the panel, guests are invited to view the Mind/Matter exhibition until 7:15 pm.

Register for the event, and send questions to wti@yale.edu.
