Code of Conduct

The Wu Tsai Institute is dedicated to the highest ethical and professional standards in pursuit of our mission. The Institute’s Code of Conduct represents our shared values and ensures we foster safe and productive learning, research, and work environments where all feel welcome, included, respected, and supported to do their best.

All Institute faculty, postdocs, students, other researchers, staff, users of facilities, committee members, and visitors are expected to abide by the Code when engaging in written, virtual, and in-person interactions representing the Institute. In concert with our shared values, community members are also expected to adhere to Yale's Institutional Standards of Conduct.

Be ethical

Act to uphold standards of scientific integrity and professional ethics.

Be respectful

Treat all people encountered in professional life with respect in all forms of communication, especially remote communication, where opportunities for misunderstanding are greater. Refrain from biased, demeaning, intimidating, coercive, harassing, discriminatory, hostile, or retaliatory behavior or speech, whether seriously or in jest, or from physical harm or attack of any kind.

Be thoughtful

Open different avenues for community members to voice their ideas and pursue their scientific interests and expect them to act with integrity and scientific rigor.

Be considerate

Strive to take care of each other in speech and actions, and actively seek to acknowledge and respect the boundaries, contexts, and preferences of others. Be supportive of your colleagues and mentees proactively and responsively, by giving appropriate credit and attribution. Be generous and kind in giving and accepting critique.

Be aware

Adopt an open, learning, and responsive mindset, in science and as related to other people’s identities and experiences and society’s legacy of racism and discrimination. We all carry unconscious bias that can affect the way we interact with or perceive others, and must strive to mitigate these predispositions. Be sensitive to various forms of bias, internal and systemic, that create exclusion in science.

Be responsive

Use the resources below if you witness harassment, aggression, discrimination, or misconduct or see someone in distress. If safe and appropriate, you might want to reach out to the person impacted by the behavior to check in.

Resources + Reporting

Community members who have experienced, observed, or learned of an issue are encouraged to contact our Assistant Director for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion or our Managing Director; all reports are confidential except when subject to mandatory reporting, including the imminent risk of harm to self or others. Violations or reports will be addressed on a case-by-case basis and may result in removal of member privileges or dismissal from a meeting, event, or facility.

Yale students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to use the following resources to report workplace concerns.
